             D E A
He bought a $20 pistol in a local shop
               D E A
somehow they both got loaded and they both went off

            E
Both went off

and they caught him in a stolen ford
           A
with the pistol in question and some powder he scored
          E
when the deal was down and the deed was done
          A E A
he was serving 20 years and turning 21

         A D
and he cried dear God what have I done
        A E A
singing Lord have mercy on your wayward son

Turning 21
as they held him in the county jail
his fears growing stronger as the liquor failed
said he had a cell waiting at the Graybar Hotel
he was praying that the judge would send him straight to hell

straight to hell
with a bullet and a stolen ford
and a full clip of promises for his dear lord
and no clear memory of how he fell
with a $20 pistol to an 8-foot cell

and he cried dear God what have I done
praying Lord have mercy on your wayward son

he bought a $20 pistol in a local shop
somehow they both got loaded and they both went off
The both went off and he cried Lordd what have I done
God have mercy on your wayward son
