Listen to One Candle

The zen koan, loosely translated, says that a candle surrenders nothing when it lights another candle. I imagined a spreading ocean of candlelight, each candle lighting another, then another. I later learned that there is a contemporary Christian ceremony that does exactly that. Go figure.

F
One candle in a storm
Not enough heat to keep my fingers warm
Dim in the firelight I see you
Use my candle light your candle too
Use my candle light your candle too

Two candles and now I see
More people standing there with you and me
Like you and me they're cold and blue
Light their candles brother I will too
Light their candles brother I will too

With a little more light we can all see better
With a little more warmth we can stand the weather
With a little more heart I'm tellin' you brother
One candle lights another
One candle lights another

G
So many candles burning now
You see it's warmer and brighter where they gather round
So let every candle light just a few
Light their candles brother I will too
Light their candles brother I will too
